Life is often described in one of four ways: a “journey”, a “battle”, a “pilgrimage” or a “race”. Select your own metaphor, but the necessity of finishing is all the same. For if life is a journey, it must be completed. If life is a battle, it must be finished. If life is a pilgrimage, it must be concluded. And if life is a race, it must be won. -- Author Unknown
“People do not really decide their future … they decide their
habits and then their habits decide their future.”
“Be life long or short, its completeness depends on what it was lived for.”
“God asks no man whether he will accept life. That is not the choice.
You must take it. The only choice is how.”
“Lots of people want to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who
will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down.” -- Oprah Winfrey
SHIP WRECKED
A voyaging ship was wrecked during a storm at sea and only two of the men on it were able to swim to a small desert-like island. The two survivors, not knowing what else to do, agreed that they had no other recourse but to pray to God. However, to find out whose prayer was more powerful, they agreed to divide the territory between them and stay on opposite sides of the island.
The first thing they prayed for was food. The next morning, the first man saw a fruit-bearing tree on his side of the island, and he was able to eat its fruit. The other man’s parcel of land remained barren.
After a week, the first man was lonely and he decided to pray for a wife. The next day, another ship was wrecked and the only survivor was a woman who swam to his side on the island. On the other side of the island, the second man had nothing.
Soon the first man prayed for a house, clothes and more food. The next day, like a miracle, all of these were given to him. The second man still had nothing.
Finally, the first man prayed for a ship, so that he and his wife could leave the island. In the morning a ship docked at his side of the island. He boarded the ship with his wife and decided to leave the second man on the island. He considered the other man unworthy to receive God’s blessings, since none of his prayers had been answered.
As the ship was about to leave, the first man heard a voice from Heaven booming: “Why are you leaving your companion on the island?”
“My blessings are mind alone, since I was the one who prayed for them, the first man answered. “His prayers were all unanswered and so he does not deserve anything.”
“You are mistaken!” the voice rebuked him. “He had only one prayer, which I answered. If not for that, you would not have received any of my blessings.”
“Tell me,” the first man asked the voice, “what did he pray for that I should owe him anything?”
“He prayed that all your prayers be answered.” -- Author Unknown
** “The optimist never worries about tomorrow—and neither does the pessimist, because he already knows everything is going to turn out wrong!”
** “Home is the first school and the first Church for children. It’s where they learn what is right, what is good and what is kind.”
** “Those who are happiest, whether king or peasant, are those who find peace in their own home.”
PRAYER
Prayer allows us to catch a glimpse into the very heart of God. How good of God to provide us with this way into His heart, through Jesus Christ.
Perhaps that is why prayer is mentioned in the Bible more than the Holy Spirit, more than worship, more than the Lord’s Supper, more than the Church, more than baptism, more than obedience and even more than love. The Bible mentions prayer 850 times! This is once every two or three pages in most Bible formats. Jesus taught ten major lessons on prayer during His ministry. Prayer is mentioned 39 times in the book of Acts alone.
We are all students in the school of prayer; none of us has graduated. May we never forget these words: “Then He spoke a parable to them that men always ought to pray and not lose heart.” -- Luke 18:1 -- from the Christian Bible Teacher magazine, January 1996.
“Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in all circumstances;
for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
-- 1 Thess. 5:16-17
Prayer introduces us to the Great Companion who meets our human needs with
His divine response. The man who has learned to pray is no longer alone in
the universe. He is living in his Father’s house.
There are times in a person’s life when, regardless of the attitude
of the body, the soul is on its knees in prayer.
Please keep in mind that our time together on Sunday mornings from June 5th through August 28th, will begin at 10:30 a.m. As in the past number of years, the time from 10:30 to 10:55 will be a devotional time, while also sharing in some singing with the children.
