Have you ever thought about how the circumstances of our Lord coming to this earth range from the most miraculous to the most humble? God chose a common 14 or 15 year old girl to be the mother of Jesus. Not a queen in a palace, but a little girl—humble! An angel visited Mary to tell her that she was “highly favored of God”—miraculous! Jesus’ conception—miraculous! An angel appearing to Joseph to assure him that Mary was still the girl he should marry—miraculous! Joseph & Mary travelling by foot and by donkey to Bethlehem to register for the census—humble! Jesus birth in the stable—humble! An angel appearing to a band of humble shepherds living in the fields near Bethlehem to tell them about the new King—miraculous! A “great host” of angels then appeared to the shepherds—miraculous! Sometime later a new star was set in the eastern sky to guide the Magi to Jesus—miraculous! The Magi presenting Mary, Joseph and Jesus with gifts of great value, and worshiping Jesus—miraculous! The Magi being warned in a dream not to go back to Herod—miraculous! An angel appearing to Joseph to warn him of impending harm to Jesus and giving him directions on where he should hide his family in Egypt—miraculous! After a time an angel appearing again to Joseph to tell him it was safe for them to go to the land of Israel—miraculous!
“For God so loved the world …” That’s you and me that He loves—now that’s miraculous!
A REAL SACRIFICE …
In the 20’s when I was teaching in a little country school, it was the custom for the teacher to buy each pupil a Christmas present and usually, the pupils gave the teacher one on the last day before vacation.
The afternoon was always “party time” and after the games and fun, some teachers opened their gifts—but I never did, much to the disappointment of those who gave, and to the joy of those who couldn’t afford to give. I wrote letters to each during vacation, whether they gave or not.
I had one little freckle-faced, skinny boy who never wore warm enough clothing and whose boots had holes in them. His father was too proud to let me help Kenneth, so I allowed him to help me do things after school, for which a dime was a real gift to him.
On that particular day, I had stayed to clean the blackboards and put away decorations. It was late and the afternoon sun was shining low across the fields. I looked out the window and saw Kenneth running across the field, his thin jacket flapping in the wind.
When he arrived at the door, he had a package wrapped in newspaper and as he shyly handed it to me, he said, “Mrs. Saunders, I didn’t have any money for a present for you, and the other kids gave you ‘store’ presents, so I couldn’t give you this in front of them.”
It was a glass jar of thick whipping cream, fresh from the separator. I knew that the family sold their cream in town to buy needed supplies, so this was a real sacrifice. I hugged Kenneth and told him he couldn’t have given me anything I would have liked better and he sprinted back across the field, happy he had given his teacher a present she really liked.
That day will always stay clear in my mind. -- Idarose Saunders.
HA! HA!: A married couple had been out Christmas shopping at the mall for most of the afternoon when the woman realized that her husband had disappeared.
The somewhat irate wife called her husbands cell phone and demanded, “Where are you? You’re supposed to be helping me with this shopping!”
He replied, “Darling, you remember that jewellery shop where you saw the diamond necklace and totally fell in love with it and I didn’t have money at that time and said, ‘honey, it’ll be yours one day.’”
“Yes, I remember that, my love,” said the wife with a smile.
“Well, I’m in the coffee shop next to it.”
“This Christmas season, may you be refreshed anew by the nearness of Christ’s presence,
the depth of His love, and the joy of
celebrating His blessings”.
THE BIRTH OF JESUS …
In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register.
So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.” When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about. So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen which were just as they had been told. -- Luke 2:1-20
